‘The Bull Raid 2010’

Race Video by Danny Gibson of Chipit video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfUhei5dEZY

Set in the grounds of Bellurgan Park Estate in County Louth, the north-east’s first 12 hour Mountain Bike Race took  place last  Saturday, 7th August.

The course was an extension of the recent Leinster XC Championship round. This inaugural XC event, powered by the members of Cuchulainn CC,  consisted of a solo category and teams of two and four riders.

The event was a chipped event from Chip-It, riders swapping their chip in the pits. Overnight camping was available, together with safe parking and shower facilities on site. Race Director Tony Kelly saw the potential for such an extreme event on the newly built mountain biking course in Bellurgan.

How many laps of the park could an individual or team of riders complete in 12 hours? There was 3 separate categories, individuals, along with 2 or 4 person teams. With the teams, as one person completed the course the other would rest up waiting to go again. The pits were a hive of activity and hibernation with the down rider taking a well earned rest, in the tented village, before it was his or her turn to ride again. The answer was 17, completed by the two man team of Carlingford Lough locals Aidan McDonald and Raymond O`Shaughnessy. Aidan was the only person to go under the 40 min barrier, posting 4 laps of his 8 in under 40. With his final lap of 37:30 being the fastest lap of the day.  Just behind them was the first 4 man team of Alan Bingham, Myles McCorry, Glynn O’Brien and Connor Campbell. The winning ladies team was comprised of Belfast duo Julie McCorry and Andrea Harrower, whom completed 12 laps.

The outright solo winner on the day was Dublin’s Richie Close. Riding non-stop over the off-road terrain for 12 hours he completed 13 laps of the course. All in all the event was a huge success with Tracy Sayers and her colleague on hand to massage those weary legs for the afternoon session.  Throughout the day, riders and supporters were treated to pasta meals, music and a post race bar-b-q and evening bon-fire, with many commenting that it was more like a festival than a race! As well as hosting an excellent event Tony Kelly along with Niall Clarke, also managed to finish second overall in the 2 person team event, completing 16 laps of the course.

Big thanks to the sponsors Niall Clarke Oils, Revolution Cycles, Newry provided cycling jerseys for category winners. To the Order of Malta for providing cover for 12 hours and to all the marshals on course all day.
